Sometimes there are bad days, no matter what you touch it breaks or fails or you drop it or you cut your hand with it. For me it is usually things that just break down.
I wanted to start all the servers, everything went nice when I realized one server was not even connected. I fixed it, put it back into the rack, but did not connect it. Connected, did not work, connected to the right switch, ok. Then my new storage server that I am installing these days did not connect. Checked, file system error. I am just testing it, but this is not good news, so let's see what's wrong. Oh, no keyboard, so found a keyboard, logged in, fsck, file system seem to be ok, so great, I will deal with this later. Let's start some stress test to be sure.
So I logged to all the servers I wanted to upgrade. All at once, created a screenshot, then BANG the electricity went. It felt as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced except the house is full with APC screams.
Complete darkness, several fuses went and the ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). Oh, I think I had unbalanced load, 20A on one line, that's ok, but the fuses there are only 16A and I am measuring multiple fuses 20A, so that might be my bad, I disconnected and connected lines lately.
But when the fuses went my ever-so-important server went down, the UPS is solid red, it says I really need to buy new batteries. I knew that, of course, but right now? Right now?!
When the server went down my PDUs, my light-switches, the ventilation stayed in the state they were, no way to switch things until the server comes up except maybe with a ladder... oh, I need to put these important services to a backup server. The dhcp, nodered, the mqtt, one of the DNS servers... I have a laptop, that would do nicely, I will use laptops to hold these small containers.
So I upgraded the laptop, tested the virtualization, copied some containers, rebooted... BUMMER, the laptop does not reboot, does not shut down. Because of the upgrade something changed, so it stops dead when I try to shut it down. I tried everything I found on three Google, page, nothing works...
Since the Saturday was similarly happy, I think I will not do anything else this weekend, nothing serious at least. I started a dist upgrade on the laptop though, I hop I will not burn down the house or at least if I do my insurance is up to date...
